270 XT Mk2: freestanding 270° awning that fits short racks and sets up in 30 seconds

The 270 XT Mk2 wraps 8m² of shade around the side and rear of your vehicle with no poles. It runs a single pivot, so opening it is one continuous movement rather than a sequence: unzip the bag, swing the arm out, then secure the tension strap on the outer arm to the vehicle to tension the canvas. You're in the shade in under 30 seconds. A single pivot also means fewer moving parts and less to line up in the dark at the end of a long day.

Which of our awnings suits you?

The 270 XT Mk2 needs only 1.1m between mounting points, so it fits short dual cab racks, canopy racks and load bars that can't accommodate the 1.8m distance between the front and rear brackets that our larger awnings need. At 27.8kg it's 5.7kg lighter than the 270 XT MAX, making it the lightest awning in our 270° range.

  • 270 XT Mk2: 8m² round the side and rear, 1.1m minimum rack, lightest of our 270s.
  • 270 XT MAX Mk2: 12.2m², more front and side coverage than the 270 XT Mk2 for families and bigger groups; needs 1.8m between brackets, 33.5kg.
  • 180 XT MAX: 8.53m² straight down the side, keeps barn doors and tailgates clear; needs 1.8m.

For solo or duo touring, or on a shorter rack, the 270 XT Mk2 is the better buy, not a compromise. If you want more shade along the front and side for a family or bigger group, and have 1.8m of rack length, step up to the MAX.

Freestanding, rated to 50km/h

There are no poles under it: nothing to sink into wet sand, trip over at night or rattle loose on corrugations. The B-Tech® Alloy main arms are fully gusseted for maximum strength: gusseting adds torsional stiffness at the joints, so the frame holds its shape and the canvas stays tensioned with nothing on the ground. The rear arm has a honeycomb cross-section along its full length for torsional strength without extra weight.

It's rated to 50km/h freestanding and to over 90km/h when poled, guyed and pegged down securely. Guy ropes and pegs are included: in windy conditions, use them on the non-trussed arm to prevent upward movement.

Packing away is the same movement in reverse, into an oversized 450gsm PVC bag that takes the canvas back easily even when it's wet or dusty.

Stainless steel headstock: where the strength starts

The whole awning pivots on a stainless steel heavy-duty headstock that retains the stainless steel hinge pin shafts for the arms. It carries the full load of the open awning into the vehicle mount, so this is where an awning's strength is won or lost. Stainless steel resists corrosion from salt spray, keeps the arms swinging freely through dust and corrugations, and holds its shape under load, and the rear L bracket mounts straight to it.

One seam. Fewer leaks.

Every stitch line across an awning is a place water can get in. The 270 XT Mk2 is made from 315gsm acrylic-treated polyester ripstop canvas cut from an ultra-wide roll, so the whole 270° awning has a single seam. It's tested to a waterhead of more than 1000mm (ISO 811:1981), treated for UV, mould and mildew, and has triple-stitched sleeves and reinforced attachment points at every load-bearing corner. Wet it down before its first trip so the core-spun thread swells and seals the stitch holes.

Two brackets, 1.1m, done

Two height adjustable heavy-duty stainless steel L brackets are included in the price. One must be mounted to the stainless steel headstock at the rear of the awning, and the second no less than 1.1m from the rear bracket. Add a third (not supplied) in the centre if you want extra support on a long rack, but two is all the awning needs. Packed, it's 2300mm long × 210mm high, with a frame 170mm wide, and sits inside a standard roof line without overhang.

Running a Bush Company rooftop tent? The optional Awning-to-Tent bracket mounts it straight to the tent for a low, tidy touring profile.

Add walls when the weather turns

A 50mm triple-stitched strip of genuine Velcro® loop runs the entire length of the valance around the outside edge of the awning. It's rated to hold 3kg per 50mm length, so it's ideal for securing awning walls. Using Velcro rather than a zip along the awning also means there's no zip to rub against the canvas when the awning is packed tightly away in transit. Run a single canvas wall or mesh wall as a windbreak on the exposed side, or add the 270 XT Wall Kit to close it in completely and turn 8m² of shade into a private room. The single walls have full-length YKK spiral zips on both sides, so you can zip canvas and mesh walls together to increase coverage as required.

Usage guidance

  • In windy conditions, use the supplied guy ropes and pegs on the non-trussed arm to prevent upward movement.
  • In heavy rain, run guy ropes off 1-tonne webbing straps between the arms to shed water and reduce the risk of pooling.
  • Lubricate the hinge pins in the headstock regularly to keep the arms moving freely, especially if you use the awning often in salty coastal conditions.
  • Don't leave it up in snow: the weight stretches the canvas.
  • Wet the canvas down thoroughly before first use.
  • See the awning installation instructions (PDF).

Care & Maintenance

Using & Caring For Your Awning

Before Use:

We recommend that new awnings are thoroughly wet down before first use. This lets the core-spun stitching thread swell and seal the stitch holes, so your awning performs well in wet weather.

Deploying & Packing Away:

  • When unzipping the awning, make sure the zippers are right to the top of the bag at each end and that the bottom corners of the bag are not caught on the awning frame.
  • When deploying your awning if the canvas seems excessively tight, STOP and check that the canvas is not caught at the headstock and that it has not slid too far one way in the sail-track on the awning frame.
  • When packing the awning away, ensure that the canvas is not pinched between the awning arms, especially close to the headstock.

Cleaning Canvas & PVC Bag:

  • To clean canvas use a soft brush and cold water.
  • Do not expose to petrol, oils or harsh chemicals.
  • The PVC bag can be cleaned with standard car wash cleaning solution.

Cleaning mould:

Your awning canvas is pre-treated with mould and mildew resistance, but if mould/mildew does occur please follow these steps:

  • Allow mould to dry.
  • Remove surface mould with stiff bristle brush.
  • Vacuum the area.
  • Treat area with Oil of Clove spray (diluted spray can be purchased or can be mixed using a few drops of oil into a spray bottle of water).

Regular Maintenance & Checks:

Like any accessory used in extreme conditions regular maintenance is required to ensure the longevity of your awning, including:

  • Inspect the stainless steel headstocks to identify any bolts that may need re-tightening.
  • Lubricate the hinge pins in the headstocks regularly to keep the arms moving freely, especially if you use the awning often in salty coastal conditions.
  • Ensure that the awning canvas is correctly located in the sail-track on the backing frame to eliminate excessive tension on the canvas.
  • Inspect the attachment of the canvas to the ends of the awning arms.
  • Inspect canvas to identify any wear marks caused by incorrect packing of the canvas.

FAQS

What are the dimensions?

When packed away, the awning dimensions are approximately 2300mm L x 210mm H, with a frame 170mm wide. When open the awning is 8m².

See dimension diagrams here:

Is the 270 XT Awning Mk2 freestanding?

Yes. Once mounted to your vehicle, no poles or ground supports are needed. It's rated to 50km/h freestanding and over 90km/h when poled, guyed and pegged down securely. Guy ropes and pegs are included; in windy conditions, use them on the non-trussed arm to prevent upward movement.

How much shade does it give?

8m² (86 sq ft) of 270° wraparound coverage across the side and rear of your vehicle.

How heavy is the awning?

27.8kg (61.3 lb), before brackets. It's the lightest 270-degree awning in the Bush Company range.

How long does it take to set up?

Under 30 seconds, one person. The single pivot means deployment is one continuous movement: swing the arm out, then secure the tension strap on the outer arm to the vehicle to tension the canvas.

Can I add walls?

Yes. A 50mm strip of genuine Velcro® brand loop runs the entire length of the valance around the outside edge of the awning, rated to hold 3kg per 50mm, ready for canvas and mesh wall kits. Run one wall as a windbreak or enclose the space completely.

What's the difference between the 270 XT Mk2 and the 270 XT MAX Mk2?

The XT has a single pivot, 8m² (86 sq ft) of coverage, weighs 27.8kg (61.3 lb), sets up in under 30 seconds and fits racks from 1.1m. The MAX has two pivot points and a forward-folding front section for 12.2m² (131 sq ft) and more front and side coverage, weighs 33.5kg (73.9 lb) and needs 1.8m between the headstock brackets. Choose the XT for shorter racks and a lighter load; the MAX for maximum coverage around the vehicle.

Does this awning need poles?

No. Poles are only recommended when running the optional awning wall kits, and those poles come with the wall kit.

Left hand or right hand fitment — which do I need?

Choose the side you want the awning to deploy from. Most tourers fit it to the side their camp kitchen or canopy door opens onto. On a right hand drive vehicle (like Australia), the Left Hand awning mounts to the passenger side.

What's the warranty?

2 years conditional.

Can I install it myself?

Yes. At 27.8kg (61.3 lb) you'll want a second set of hands for lifting and bolting. Fitting instructions are in our Guides & Instructions section, or any Bush Company stockist can fit it for you.

Are brackets included?

Yes. Two height adjustable heavy-duty stainless steel L brackets ship with the awning.

What roof rack do I need?

Any rack or load bars giving at least 1.1m between mounting points. One L bracket must be mounted to the stainless steel headstock at the rear of the awning, and the second no less than 1.1m from the rear bracket.

How do I install it? (video)

Customers praised this as "the strongest on the market" with exceptional build quality and thick canvas. The awning handles winds up to 50kph without faltering. Shoppers noted excellent customer service and stability. Some mentioned the PVC bag and installation considerations for SUVs with high rear doors.

  • Best awnings on the market. Reliable, strong
  • exceeded all of them

Would not hesitate to buy again

I did a ridiculous amount of research in choosing the 270XT, and it has not disappointed. There are a few slightly larger and lighter options on the market, but when the wind is howling and its bucketing it down you want the strongest on the market every time. The whole thing is absolute quality, thick canvas, a single seam so it does not leak, well thought out wear points, hard wearing powder coat and quality welds, the list goes on. The customer service from initial queries about bracket positioning to after sales contact has been exceptional. Freight was quick and reasonable. I have just got back from a 5 day trip to the Holland Track and it was up morning, noon and night, every night without a worry. We measured 35kph winds on the last day, with a few gusts of 50kph and it did not falter. It was easy to see the difference in quality and stability when placed directly next to a cheaper Chinese awning, 20kph winds had them stopping what they were doing and reaching to grab the awning but the Bush Company did not move. The first time I had it up I actually could not believe how strong the arms are when you grab them on the ends, I thought something else must be holding this up, but when they move a little in the videos know they are giving it a decent tug. Super cool underneath the thick canvas too. I've retrofitted mine with dimmable LED lights and a touch switch which was quite easy to do, and also some stick on Velcro dots to hold the straps out of the way from the doors (a sewn in one would be better though- an easy upgrade for future revisions). It's actually very reasonable in price when you consider you have to pay $340 for decent brackets for just about every other awning on the market, the adjustable stainless brackets provided are definitely worth keeping. The only thing I was a little disappointed at was the PVC bag, in all the videos the canvas bag did seem like a great option considering how its roomy, breathable, double wear points etc, but a few phone calls later I realise it was a genuine upgrade as the PVC wears a lot better overall and does not leach onto the vehicle like the older canvas bags. A month or so old and its no longer super shiny and plastic looking so it now looks perfectly fine on the car, it was also a little tight to fold up at the start, but starting to wear in nicely now and I can get it zipped up quite easily. I was also a little thrown off by the backing plate, as it is now an all solid extruded aluminium backing plate rather than the welded aluminum frame in all of the pictures- I am not too sure at whether this is an upgrade or downgrade (any changes in weight/strength etc?) as there's not really any information on it, but it did throw me off as there were no pictures, videos or mention of that changing along the way- it possibly should have been marketed as a mk3 as its quite a significant change. FWIW I weighed the awning at around 25kg by itself, and 3x brackets were about 5kg, so 30kg all up if you go for 3x brackets. Still glad I chose the original XT and not the max for my uses, as there's just something about its simplicity, and its so rock solid. Being a solo/duo camper I only need the space the regular XT provides, but we did manage to fit 5x guys under it to get out of the sun and rain on several occasions. Overall a few tiny gripes but I thoroughly recommend the awning and would not hesitate to buy again.

An extremely strong and well built awning.

An extremely strong and well built awning. Just back from Bedourie where wind was constantly blowing 20 to 30km per hour. No need to tie down no flapping or noise. Provides a great shade area with total clearance from ropes or stays. Often out bush on bird surveys where quick and good shade cover is essential. Can not recommend this product enough.

Perfect for utes

I purchased one of these because several of my friends recommended them. However my 2023 MU-X has a rear lifting door that goes too high. So I had to go back to a standard awning - just check if you have an SUV before you wreck the back door. Perfect for utes.

Top notch quality, the workmanship is as you'd expect from Bush Company. Its definitely a premium price, but comparatively the best awning I've been around, took me a year to settle on this particular one.

I understand the benefit of cutting and fitting the bag/cover yourself, but its quite a task, be prepared to take your time. I rushed the first cut and regretted it.

I put it up and left it open in a breeze and realised it needed to be lowered as it was sitting quite high and there was a lot of flex, once lowered there's minimum movement - just enough to prevent damage. I have it fitted to a Rhino platform and it was simple and fitted well between two slats - so its solid.

Only a couple small gripes - a couple of spring washers were the wrong size so I had to buy a bag from the hardware no big deal but again big price tag I didn't want to have to buy anything more. The other is to include a sticker or two, free advertising for you and people generally like to collect them.

Definitely a 5 star product.

270 XT Awning Mk2

$2,550.00
