$6,950.00

Aluminium Clamshell Rooftop Tent · 30-Second Setup · 200kg Roof Rating

The AX27 is our all-round clamshell: gas struts lift the aluminium shell in about 30 seconds, it opens to 1.7m of headroom at the entry end, and there's more than 120mm of space inside when it's closed, so standard bedding, sheets, sleeping bags, pillows and doonas stay stored right inside. Three entrances, an 80mm dual-density mattress and built-in 12V and USB power are standard, and it comes with the Deluxe Telescopic Ladder.

The internally reinforced roof is rated to 200kg dynamic when closed, and Ezi-Slot channels take solar, tracks, a shovel or an awning. Made in South Africa, with a 2-year conditional warranty.

AX27: a hard shell clamshell rooftop tent for long-range touring

The AX27 is our all-round rooftop tent: a fast, comfortable aluminium clamshell with power built in and a roof strong enough to carry the rest of your kit. It weighs 99kg without the ladder or fitment set and sits 280mm high when closed.

Set up in 30 seconds, bedding inside

The shell closes on our own custom-made, heavy-duty over-centre latches, made from stainless steel, and they have holes for a padlock so you can lock the tent.

Undo them, let the gas struts lift the shell, then slot the 8mm spring steel rods into the stainless steel corner receivers to hold the rainfly out over the entrances. The AX27 is fully set up in about 30 seconds, with no frame to put together.

It opens to 1.7m of headroom at the entry end, enough to sit up and get changed. When it's closed there's more than 120mm of space inside, so standard bedding, sheets and sleeping bags stay stored right inside the closed tent, along with pillows, doonas and even an electric blanket. That saves space in your vehicle and keeps your bedding clean and dust free.

Comfort for two

The 80mm mattress (2.13m long × 1.28m wide) has 40mm of medium-density foam on top for comfort, over a 40mm high-density foam base that gives a firm foundation and resists bottoming out. It has a removable, zippered canvas cover over a thermal marine carpet underlay designed to help reduce condensation beneath the mattress.

  • Entrances: large front and side entrances make getting in and out of the tent easy. Each entrance has an outer canvas door, an inner canvas door and midge mesh, and every canvas door and midge mesh has YKK spiral zips.
  • Ventilation: the inner canvas doors let you control ventilation from inside the tent without opening the midge mesh screens, and a mesh-covered vent above the rear door keeps air moving when you've closed everything up.
  • Storage: six roof pouches, four large canvas side pouches and two canvas water bottle pockets.
  • Carpeted roof liner: Velcro pouches stick straight to it.

Power built in

  • Outlets: a 12V socket and twin 2.4A USB-A ports on each side of the mattress.
  • Power input: fed from your vehicle through a 50A Anderson plug under the tent. No extra wiring kit is needed.
  • Lighting: a movable tri-colour LED light (white, amber and red) that's battery powered and rechargeable by USB.
  • Cable channels: zippered canvas channels run up the inside of the roof to keep wiring for fans and lights neatly stored, so nothing gets caught when you close the tent.

Built for Australian conditions

The frame is our B-Tech® Alloy extruded aluminium with reinforced, welded corners and stainless steel hinges, latches and handles.

The body is dual-layer 315gsm ±5% acrylic-treated polyester ripstop canvas, treated against mould, mildew and UV. The two layers work like double glazing: the air gap between them insulates better against heat and cold and significantly reduces condensation build-up on the inside of the tent walls. They also make it a blackout fabric that adds weather resistance and blocks out light, so the tent stays darker at sunrise.

Automotive-grade rubber seals keep the tent dust free and watertight when it's closed.

A large removable one-piece rainfly with 8mm spring steel poles and adjustable storm straps covers the entrances in wet weather.

Why the rainfly matters

  • Dry entry and exit: it covers the ladder and entryway, so you can get in and out safely without getting soaked or bringing dripping water inside.
  • Extra weather protection: it's an extra layer of defence against heavy rain, stopping water pooling directly against the main tent canvas or doorways.
  • Airflow in wet weather: it shields the openings, so you can keep windows or vents cracked open for fresh air without rain splashing inside.

A roof that carries the rest of your kit

The internally reinforced roof is rated to 200kg dynamic when closed and 50kg when open, subject to the rating of whatever the tent is mounted to. That's enough for solar panels, boards or a tinny on Rooftop Tent Load Bars.

Ezi-Slot channels take more than 15 of our accessories without drilling, including:

As with any roof-mounted gear, add up the tent, your rack or canopy and anything carried on top, and confirm the total is within your vehicle's and rack's dynamic roof load ratings.

Getting in and out

The tent comes with the 2.6m Deluxe Telescopic Ladder with wide angled steps and two ladder brackets: one pre-mounted at the open end of the tent, and one you can mount to either side. You can climb in through the open end or from the side, whichever suits your vehicle setup.

Install your tent

The AX27 comes with:

You can fit the tent the usual way, with the open end at the rear of the vehicle, or in reverse, with the open end facing forward and the ladder secured to a roof rack on the cab. If you fit it in reverse, the Rooftop Tent Dead Bolt Bracket is required, for extra protection against the tent opening while you're driving.

See our rooftop tent mounting options for canopies, low-profile mounts and cab clearance. The Bush Company or one of our stockists can fit it, or you can follow the fitting instructions in the Installation tab.

Is the AX27 right for you?

Choose the AX27 for the most roof capacity in our range and room for full bedding.

  • If weight and height profile matter more, the LX27 Gen 2 is 18kg lighter and 105mm lower.
  • If you want near-full headroom from end to end rather than a clamshell's sloping roof, look at the double-action TX27 and TX27 MAX.

Watch the AX27 product walkthrough video for a full tour of the tent.

Made in South Africa for The Bush Company, with a 2-year conditional warranty. Buy online, pick up the same day from our showroom in Marcoola on the Sunshine Coast, or order through one of our stockists Australia wide.

Care & Maintenance

Rooftop Tent Care and Maintenance

We recommend that new rooftop tents are opened and the canvas wet down on the outside before first use. Do not spray water onto the air vent above the rear door. This will ensure that your rooftop tent performs flawlessly in wet weather by allowing the poly/cotton core spun thread and canvas to swell ensuring the take up of any potential leaks in the stitching.

Regular Maintenance

  • Lubricate the tent seal with silicon gel and clean seal mating surface thoroughly to prevent the seal from 'sticking' to the tent frame.
  • Check for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, tears, or loose stitching in the tent fabric, midge mesh and seals.
  • Inspect zippers, gas struts, hinges for smooth operation and lubrication.

Cleaning Canvas:

  • Do not use soap or detergents on the canvas.
  • Do not store the product if wet, allow drying first.
  • To clean use a soft brush and cold water.
  • Do not expose to petrol, oils or harsh chemicals.

Cleaning Mould From Canvas:

The canvas of The Bush Company Tents is treated during manufacturing with a mould and mildew inhibitor, but in the event that your tent canvas develops mould please follow the steps below to remove it:

  • Allow mould to dry
  • Remove surface mould off with a stiff bristle brush
  • Vacuum the area
  • Treat area with Oil of Clove spray (diluted spray can be purchased or can be mixed using a few drops of oil into a spray bottle of water)

Condensation:

Condensation is a natural occurrence, the combination of cold nights and warm days can create a lovely environment for mould and mildew to develop. This is not because of bad seals but from temperature changes combined with humidity creating condensation inside the tent.

When in use, reduce condensation build-up, keep some of the windows open to increase airflow.

After your trip, make sure you allow the tent to fully dry inside and out. If you are not using your rooftop tent for an extended time (more than 10 days) open the tent regularly to air it out, and possibly remove the mattress and store it separately until your next trip.

Tent Frame Care

To ensure the longevity and aesthetic appeal of your powder coated surfaces, regular care and maintenance are essential. Factors such as pollution, dirt, salt, and exposure to strong ultraviolet (UV) light can gradually impact the quality and integrity of the coating over time.

Cleaning Recommendations:

  • Remove Loose Dirt: Begin by gently removing any loose dirt or deposits from the surface using a wet sponge. This initial step helps prevent scratching during the cleaning process.
  • Use Mild Cleaning Solutions: for general cleaning, utilize a non-abrasive brush or cloth along with a ph-neutral car wash product such as Rig Wash from Revival Offroad to keep the surface of the tent if good condition. These solutions effectively remove dust, salt, and other deposits without causing damage to the powder coating.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: after applying the cleaning solution, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water. This step ensures the removal of any residue or cleaning agents that may be left behind.

Powder Coat Treatment

We recommend that at a minimum of once every six months or if your powder coat surface is fading, the powder coat should be treated with a dedicated powder coat restorer such as Rig Revive. Follow the application directions on the product you select.

Recommended Cleaning Frequency:

  • For general use we recommend cleaning and powder coat treatment every six months as a good practice to maintain appearance and coating integrity.
  • If your tent is used regularly for beach camping we recommend cleaning the tent after each trip as you should your vehicle.
  • If your tent is located in an area with high exposure to pollutants or intense UV radiation from being outside all the time, it should be cleaned and the powder coat treated approximately every three months.

 Important Considerations

Avoid Harsh Detergents: Steer clear of detergents that recommend the use of gloves when handling, as they are usually harsh and may be unsuitable for cleaning powder coatings. Instead, opt for a good quality car wash and wax or a similar mild cleaning solution.

Caution with Solvents

While certain solvents are recommended for removing sealants or other building residues, they can potentially harm the extended life of the powder coated surface. To minimise risks, it is best to avoid using solvents unless absolutely necessary. If paint splashes, sealants, or other residues need to be removed, you can safely use methylated spirits, turpentine, or white spirits. However, be cautious as their use may still have long-term effects that may not be immediately visible and could take up to twelve months to appear.

Powder Coat Paint Repair

If the powder coat surface of your tent is damaged and needs to be touched up we recommend the following:

Stacked with features

WE TAKE COMFORT SERIOUSLY

An 80mm dual-density foam mattress gives a proper night's sleep, and the AX27 opens to 1.7m of headroom at the entry end, so you can sit up, stretch out and get changed. When it's closed there's more than 120mm of space inside, so standard bedding, sheets, sleeping bags, pillows and doonas stay stored right inside.

ROOM ON TOP, FOR MORE ADVENTURES

The internally reinforced roof is rated to 200kg dynamic when closed, so you can carry solar panels, surfboards or even a tinny. The Ezi-Slot system takes more than 15 of our brackets and accessories, so you can set the tent up the way you tour. As with any roof-mounted gear, check the total is within your vehicle's and rack's dynamic roof load ratings.

BUY ONCE, BUY RIGHT

The frame uses our B-Tech® Alloy extrusion with reinforced, welded corners, and the body is dual-layer 315gsm ±5% acrylic-treated polyester ripstop canvas: the air gap between the layers works like double glazing to insulate and significantly reduce condensation on the inside walls, and the blackout fabric resists the weather and blocks light. A large rainfly with 8mm spring steel poles and adjustable storm straps keeps the weather out of the entrances.

UP IN 30 SECONDS

Undo the custom-made, heavy-duty stainless steel over-centre latches, let the gas struts lift the AX27's lid and slot the spring steel poles into the stainless steel corner receivers to set the rainfly: you're ready for the night in about 30 seconds. Leave your bedding inside when you pack up, and keep the space in your 4WD for everything else.

Made in South Africa, they’ve earned a reputation as the real deal—proven in the harshest conditions and respected by overlanders worldwide. The Bush Company

AX27 Clamshell Rooftop Tent

$6,950.00

Power built in
